FORMstudio’s Benbow Yard courtyard houses progressing on site
Work is now well underway on site on this pair of new-build, 2-storey, 3-bedroom family houses on a tight, former industrial plot in Southwark.
The ground floor is in pale London stock brick with the upper barrel-vaulted storey to be finished in zinc standing-seam cladding; materials which reference the industrial heritage of the site, but articulated with a fine level of detailing.
To minimise the bulk of the new structure, to ensure that there is no
loss of daylight to the surrounding properties, the ground floor has been sunk
down below the existing level. On the
east side, where the site boundary is closest to the adjoining houses, the
first floor is set back to allow for an extensive planted sedum roof.
New windows are orientated to the south to take advantage of unrestricted views, maximise natural light and avoid overlooking. Each house will open onto its own private courtyard.
The main contractor for the project is Building Designs.
