Hankey Place
FORMstudio’s mixed residential development on a brownfield site in SE1, described as an “excellent scheme” by the planning committee, comprises an apartment building and three family homes. The key to the successful application was the imaginative use of space to generate high-density occupation without overlooking, whilst capturing space for gardens.
The jigsaw of new buildings combines a sculptural white apartment block and two terraced houses, all three with carefully designed massing and angled windows to ensure privacy. In between these properties, there is a third, “stealth” house allowing virtually the entire site to be built on. From the street, this house is totally concealed behind the site boundary wall; within the site, its low profile green roof serves to provide an outlook for the taller buildings. Two private courtyards and a glazed slot in the roof ensure that daylight enters the house.
